SUNGAI PETANI: There are signs of support from the Chinese community in Kedah for Barisan Nasional (BN) in the coming 14th General Election (GE14).
Sungai Petani parliamentary candidate Datuk Shahanim Mohd Yusof said the Chinese community in her constituency had questioned the contribution by the incumbent MP.
"The Chinese and Indian communities had made the comparison of what they received from federal government and the MP, in terms of the aid to the Chinese- and Tamil-medium schools in the constituency," she said after attending Program Kasih Sayang Rakyat at Pantai Prai near here today.
They realised that BN had done a lot for the community as well as others, she added.
Shahanim hoped that this latest development would translate into votes for BN.
She said the majority of the people in the constituency wanted a change after two terms under the opposition.
She also praised the opposition candidates and their supporters for being mature, recalling that during one of her campaign series, her team crossed paths with a PKR campaign team at one of the night markets.
Instead of being provocative, both sides of the political divide exchanged their manifestos and took pictures together.
"It is a healthy competition and I hope this will last until the polling day", she said.
Sungai Petani comprise of 112,000 voters with Malays forming the majority of the electorate. Women voters make up 52% of the electorate.
In the last general election, Datuk Johari Abdul of PKR won the seat with a 9548 majority over BN, KITA and an independent candidate.
