MUAR: Former cabinet minister Tun Daim Zainuddin has only one word to say following his sacking from Umno: "Alhamdulillah" (Praise be to God).
Daim, who was the finance minister during the premiership of Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, said it would not be right for him to be sitting together with those who had committed mistakes.
In a thinly-veiled comment, Daim stated that many had decided to pull a "u-turn" from Umno as the party was on the path of destruction.
"I heard stories that I have been sacked (from Umno) ... Alhamdulillah," he said.
"If we are driving a car and there is a river in front of us, will we drive into it? U-turn la.
"If they have brains, they will do a u-turn. The fools will go (into the river)," he said in his speech during a dialogue session at Parit Yusof here.
Umno secretary-general, Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor, today confirmed that the party had sacked Daim and Tan Sri Rafidah Aziz for colluding with the opposition.
The party has also initiated investigations on Tan Sri Rais Yatim, who has been vocal in voicing his dissatisfaction with the government.
Later when met by reporters, Daim stressed that he has always voiced his opinions on various issues related to the government.
However, recent events during nomination day, which among others saw incumbent Batu MP Tian Chua disqualified from contesting, was the straw that broke the camel's back.
"Enough is enough. There is no more rule of law in this country. They want to win at all cost and they want to steal the election. I cannot agree to that," he said.
Daim stated that he had not received any official letter from Umno over his sacking, and only heard about it from the news.
He also confirmed that he had no plans to join the opposition for the time being, citing age as a factor.
"I am old already ... no need to join a party. (Only) when the time comes ... for now I will be independent," he said.
