SUNGAI PETANI: In a bid to entice voters in Kedah, Barisan Nasional (BN) has promised a whopping RM25 million in development projects if the coalition wins one parliamentary and three state seats in the 14th general election (GE14).
In announcing the goodies, caretaker Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said the government will build a community hall and a sports complex worth RM10 million in the Sungai Petani constituency.
He said this can only be done if Datuk Shahanim Mohd Yusof and three other state seat candidates under the constituency deliver the winning votes for BN.
"This is not my promise, or manifesto, but if Shahanim wins, definitely we will build a sports complex and a community hall for the people here.
"I will also allocate infrastructure projects worth RM5 million each for the state seats of Bakar Arang, Sidam and Pantai Merdeka if they win in GE14," he said to thunderous applause from Umno and BN members in a meet the people session at Taman Ria Jaya near here yesterday night.
PKR's Datuk Johari Abdul won the Sungai Petani parliamentary constituency in two consecutive general elections.
The two state seats of Sidam and Bakar Arang were also won by PKR in 2008 and 2013.
Only the Pantai Merdeka state constituency was held by BN after its candidate Datuk Ali Yahaya regained the seat in 2013, defeating Abdullah Jusoh of PAS and another independent candidate.
