Family of five perish in five-vehicle collision in Stapang

SIBU: A family of five was killed when the Perodua Viva they were travelling in was involved in a five-vehicle collision at KM49 Jalan Sibu – Bintulu today.
The fatalities in the accident near the Stapang Police Station at 3.45 pm were the driver Gelunsin Anak Sugi, 44, wife Alfreda Anak Do, 33, and their three children, Annatasia Ulas, 15, Camilla Angel, 10, and Richmont Mumin, who is believed to be four years old.
According to Sarawak Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department chief Supt Alexson Naga Chabu, the mishap took place after the victims' Perodua Viva, bound for Bintulu from Sibu, was rammed from behind by a trailer.
"The Perodua Viva then rammed a Toyota Hilux in front of it, causing the Hilux to bulldoze into the back of a Proton Saga.
"The Viva then skidded into the opposing lane and collide with an oncoming express bus from Bintulu and ended up sandwiched between the trailer and the bus," he said.
Sungai Merah Fire and Rescue Station chief, Alimat Sam when contacted by Bernama said an Emergency Medical Rescue Services (EMRS) vehicle and a utility vehicle with 12 firemen and an officer were rushed to the scene after a call was received at 3.48 pm.
He said all the bodies had been extricated from the Perodua Viva and handed over to the police and the road had been cleared to enable traffic to pass.
The driver of the express bus and his five passengers, who were slightly hurt, had been sent to the Sibu Hospital while the drivers of the trailer, Toyota Hilux and Proton Saga were unhurt. — Bernama
