Overseas voters race to cast ballots via volunteers

KUALA LUMPUR: Overseas voters are using the social media to cast their ballots with volunteers acting as their couriers.
Ravi Rishayakaran from Subang said it was his duty to assist voters abroad. He came across a Facebook group "GE14: Postal Voters Discussion" which had a volunteers' database, listing their contacts, incoming flights and airports.
"I've been at KLIA2 and there are others at KLIA1 whom I have never met before. I've done my first shift at 3.30am and sent their votes to the right places. So far, I have handled about 40 peoples' (ballots)," he told theSun when contacted today.
The 34-year-old volunteer did not encounter any logistical problems which some lamented in their FB posts, including incorrect wrong polling addresses.
"I've managed to send to the ROs (Returning Officers) safely at MBPJ as I'm handling Subang and Petaling Jaya,” he said.
"After doing so, I will update the database to let them to know their ballots are safe. The ones who are flying in are complete strangers. We are just connected by this network. It's sad to know that some had only got theirs today but we're doing the best we can.”
Further checks in the group showed the volunteers posting pictures saying the ballots were being sent to the ROs.
There are 3,653 registered overseas voters. The EC was unreachable for comments on the matter.
