LANGKAWI: Opposition leader Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad made one last impassioned plea to the nation to vote for his party instead of the ruling Barisan Nasional when the nation takes to the polls tomorrow morning.
Speaking in his constituency in Langkawi Mahathir said that this was the best opportunity for the opposition to take over the government as opposed years before when they did not have the support they have now.
"This is different from all the other elections. In the past the opposition never had any hope to beat Barisan Nasional. The opposition merely had the ambition to be a strong opposition that provides check and balance to the government and nothing more than that," he said.
He also said that the rakyat were also of the opinion that there were no changes that can be done by the opposition and that is why BN has remained in power for so long.
"In his GE14 the opposition must not just oppose but we must defeat the BN and build a new government. It's not easy to defeat the governing party, it all depends on total support from the rakyat to the opposition coalition," he said.
"Only once people are aware of the damage that has been done since Najib has been the prime minister; the destruction of government institutions. The police and other institutions no longer have the trust of the people because they cannot uphold the law anymore," he added.
While Mahathir was giving his speech in Langkawi, caretaker Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak was giving his speech simultaneously in Pekan, Pahang where he promised a whole range of goodies for the rakyat if BN wins.
Mahathir, in his speech had urged the people not to let Najib buy them over and pawn off our country because of the incentives that Najib has promised.
"Bribes will not last. In a short time, the money used to bribe us will be used up. Do not be willing to sacrifice our nation simply because of a small amount of money.
"This will happen if Najib Abdul Razak stays on as prime minister.
"I urge you to pick Pakatan Harapan to heal and save this beloved country, we can't do this alone and you can't do this alone either. Nut with both the rakyat and the party combined, we can achieve it," he added.
