GEORGE TOWN: Marzuki Yahya from Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (PPBM) who lost with a slim majority in the Tasek Gelugor parliament seat will file an election petition to urge for a recount of the votes.
Marzuki, also Penang PPBM's chairman, was unhappy with the results announced as he was edged out by incumbent Shabudin Yahaya from Barisan Nasional (BN) by 81 votes.
To make matters worse, he said the Election Commission (EC) Returning Officer (RO) did not proceed with a recount despite being asked to do so by his officer.
"I think it should be counted again as there are a total of 689 spoilt votes and 297 unreturned ballots," he said, adding that a police report will also be lodged.
In the results, both Shabudin and Marzuki fought neck-to-neck with the former obtaining 18,547 votes while Marzuki garnered 18,466.
PAS' Rizal Hafiz Ruslan obtained 14,891 votes.
