KUALA LUMPUR: Permatang Pauh MP Nurul Izzah Anwar (pix) has pledged to re-table her previous motion to abolish the Printing Presses and Publications Act (PPPA) 1984 in the upcoming Dewan Rakyat session.
"In 2010, I had prepared a bill to abolish the PPPA and to institute a media council.
"It has always been my commitment to ensure that the media is free and fair in this country," she said when met outside the Yayasan Al-Bukhari, here, today.
She also stressed that she will push for a media council to allow the press to self-govern.
"We have to make sure that this is holistic and not just a ban in parliament.
"We are talking about a new era where you celebrate truth and allow criticism, fair criticism, to construct the future government of the country to prosper," she said when asked to respond on the limited access for media practitioners imposed by the Barisan Nasional-led government when covering Parliament.
She added that the Prime Minister will also support the pushing of this bill for subsequent approval.
