Independent AG urgently required

14 May 2018 / 21:11 H.

THE PAKATAN Harapan government under the leadership of the visionary and inspirational Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad is called upon to appoint an independent attorney-general (AG) as soon as possible.
The prime minister said that 'at the moment we do not have an attorney -general'.
Given that the prime minister had repeatedly assured us that 'upholding the rule of law' would be a guiding principle of the government, this state of affairs must not be allowed to linger as the person of the attorney-general is fundamental to the proper administration of justice.
The AG must be one of the highest integrity, with sound knowledge and experience in law and most importantly, one who has earned the trust and confidence of the Malaysian public to act without fear or favour.
While there are a few such individuals, the one that stands out in clear-cut and shadowless distinctness is none other than Ambiga Sreenevasan who has had a long and unblemished legal career.
Some may argue that Ambiga is not an impartial person, having appeared in the Pakatan-sponsored public rallies.
They need to recall that when Ambiga was accused of such partisanship by Barisan Nasional during the 2013 elections, her plainly stated response was that if Barisan Nasional invited her, she would have spoken at their public rallies too".
Barisan Nasional did not dare do so because they knew that her strong stand against corruption and abuse of political office would not have changed no matter who the audience was.
It is therefore my humble plea and surely that of millions of Malaysians that Ambiga Sreenevasan be appointed AG as soon as possible.
Personally, I am not optimistic that our new government would have the courage do so, given that some prominent persons within Pakatan Harapan would be concerned that 'the skeletons in their own closets' may come tumbling down.
This a challenge that our dear prime minister would have to deal with.
Meanwhile, the people of Malaysian wait with bated breath.
