Man feared drown, vehicle plunged into Batang Sadong

KUCHING: An elderly man was feared drowned when the four-wheel drive vehicle he was driving plunged into the Batang Samarahan here early today.
During the 7.30am accident, the victim identified as Bernabas Lias Jalal, 77, was on his way to Asajaya, using the ferry service at the Muara Tuang jetty in Kota Samarahan.
A statement from the Sarawak Fire Operations Centre said the victim's vehicle suddenly move forward before plunging into the river.
"The victim was believed to have panicked at that time and got into the vehicle which then plunged into the river with him at the wheels," said the statement.
At the time of the incident, the river currents were strong and the search operation being conducted since this morning was still ongoing," it added. — Bernama
