THIS year, the Smurfs celebrate their 60th anniversary. The adorable blue creatures based on the comic created by Belgian cartoonist Pierre Culliford, also known as Peyo, are beloved by fans around the world.
Now, the Smurfs have been brought to life by talented theatrical actors, as they take over the grand stage at Genting International Showroom from now to June 24 in a 70-minute, two-act musical extravaganza entitled The Smurfs Live on Stage – The Smurfs Save Spring.
The live-action show that has been touring globally since 2014 to more than 15 countries, and entertaining over 150,000 fans, has finally arrived in Malaysia for the first time.
Featuring life-sized mushroom-shaped forest houses, vibrant backdrops and wonderful sing-along music by eight of the best-known Smurfs, including Papa Smurf, Clumsy Smurf, Brainy Smurf, Hefty Smurf, Grouchy Smurf, Vanity Smurf, Harmony Smurf and the lovely Smurfette.
Kevin Tann, vice president of Promotions and Entertainment for Resorts World Genting said: "We are delighted to be the home for the Smurfs for a month, as they triumph over the odds to save Spring in this joyous musical.
"I am looking forward to seeing this myself, as I remember growing up with the Smurfs cartoon.
"Touring productions such as The Smurfs Save Spring help to cement Resorts World Genting's commitment to providing a full range of entertainment options for families, emphasising positive messages and allowing parents and their children to bond in shared nostalgia," he added.
Directed by John Rowe and choreographed by Katie Kermond, of Millennium Entertainment International, the magical musical story presents a tale about every Smurfs' favourite time of the year – Spring. This means it's time for the much-awaited annual Spring Parade, as one lucky Smurf will be named the grand marshal of the festival.
Unfortunately, their perennial nemesis – the evil Gargamel plots to disrupt the festivities with another one of his wicked schemes. If Gargamel has his way, there won't be a parade at all; he comes up with a plan to trick Mother Nature, turning Spring off bit by bit, while catching the Smurfs in the process.
Will the Smurfs be able to save themselves and stop Gargamel and his sidekick, Azrael from turning off Spring forever? The Smurfs will need the help from the audience to make it happen.
Show producer Nick Larkin said: "It took many, many years of meetings, approvals, designing and planning to bring the show to life, but it was worth it in the end.
"We've thrilled audiences worldwide with this production and I am incredibly excited to bring The Smurfs Save Spring to Resorts World Genting.
"The show is about positive messages about friendship, teamwork and care of the environment, and I look forward to seeing happy, smiling faces in the theatre."
Tickets are priced at RM176 (VIP), RM136 (PS1) and RM96 (PS2), excluding RM4 processing fees. Children under a year old are able to enjoy free entry. A 10% discount applies for Genting Rewards Card members.
