PETALING JAYA: Gerakan president Datuk Seri Mah Siew Keong (pix) will remain in his position until the party holds its election towards the end of this year.
Mah explained that his move was based on the decision made by the party's central committee members who had asked him to stay to ensure the party's stability.
"During the recent meeting to discuss the outcome of the 14th General Election, I offered to resign as the party president and take full responsibility for our defeat in GE14.
"However, the CC members unanimously decided that my role is retained until the party election," Mah said in a statement issued today.
Mah added that the party election will start next month with branch elections being the first, followed by division then state and lastly national.
In the statement, Mah also mentioned that the rakyat have sent a clear message for change via the GE14 result and for that, they will be reviewing their role in the Barisan Nasional (BN) coalition.
While Mah called on all fellow members to show support and solidarity by rally behind the party at this difficult time, he also refuted allegations and rumours claiming that many party leaders and members have left.
