ALOR STAR: Six people were injured in a 17-vehicle pile up after a lorry carrying sand ploughed into them at a traffic light junction in Pekan Simpang Kuala here today.
Officer in charge of Jalan Raja Fire and Rescue station Firdaus Isa said they received an emergency call at 4.01pm and arrived at the scene three minutes later.
He said six firefighters and a fire engine arrived at the scene to help rescue a victim, Nurdiana Omar, 26, from Tobiar, Pendang, who was stuck in a Proton Iswara aeroback car.
"She suffered minor injuries in the hands and feet before being sent to the Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital (HSB) for treatment while five others were able to get out of their vehicles before going for treatment at a nearby clinic," he told reporters at the scene.
A witness, Mohd Nazli Abdul Wahab, 42, said he heard several loud honking, coming from a lorry carrying sand heading towards Simpang Kuala from Alor Mengkudu.
He said, however, the driver failed to stop the lorry, believed to be experiencing brake failure and crashed into a long row of vehicles including a van, that were waiting at the traffic light.
