PASIR MAS: The Kelantan Border Security Agency (Aksem) foiled an attempt to smuggle 150kg of ketum leaves worth RM7,500 to Thailand in Kampung Kubang Pak Itam, Rantau Panjang here yesterday.
Rantau Panjang Aksem commander Shuhaidi Saidon said the leaves, believed to be from a northern state in Peninsular Malaysia, were discovered in tens of gunny sacks in a car at an unoccupied house in the village at 3.15pm.
He said prior to the discovery, the car was involved in a high-speed chase with a team of Bukit Bunga Aksem personnel after the team members saw the suspicious-looking vehicle while patrolling at 11th Mile in Tanah Merah at 12.30pm.
"Subsequently, the team gave chase for about 60km but the car managed to escape (from the authority)," he told reporters at the Rantau Panjang Aksem office here today. — Bernama
