Lorry attendant gets five years' jail, whipping for raping underage girlfriend

PETALING JAYA: A lorry attendant was sentenced to five years' jail and ordered to be given two strokes of the cane by the Sessions Court here today for raping his 14-year-old girlfriend who had subsequently given birth to a baby boy.
Judge Datin Fadzlin Suraya Mohd Suah meted out the sentences on Muhammad Shahrul Imam Abdul Rahman, 21 after he changed his plea to guilty to the charge and the court ordered him to serve the jail sentence from the date of his arrest Oct 17, 2016.
He committed the offence at a house in Desa Mentari here at 5 pm on March 3, 2016, under Section 376(1) of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum 20 years imprisonment and whipping, upon conviction.
Earlier deputy public prosecutor Asyraf Ashy'ari Kamaruzaman urged the court to impose a deterrent sentence as rape cases involving minors had become more rampant of late.
However, Muhammad Shahrul Imam who was unrepresented appealed for a light sentence as he had to support his parents and the baby. — Bernama
