SUNGAI PETANI: Two married couples were among five detained with 6.165kg of drugs worth a total of RM175,000 seized in three home raids in Gurun on Wednesday.
Kedah Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department chief Supt Helmi Aris said the first husband and wife, aged 41 and 34, were picked up after police found 5.422kg of what was believed to be heroin as well as 670g of syabu in the first raid at 7.15am.
"They also seized RM11,150," he told a press conference at Kuala Muda District Police headquarters.
The couple tested positive for drugs while the male suspect had three records for substance abuse.
In the second raid, a 39-year-old man was held and 22g of what was believed to be heroin and 1g of syabu was found at 8.30am.
Helmi said the man, who tested positive for drugs, did not have any criminal record.
In the third raid, police picked up newly-weds and seized 48g of heroin, 2g of syabu and RM2,600 cash at another house at 9.20am.
The husband tested positive for drugs and had a criminal record.
Helmi said the police also impounded two cars and two motorcycles.
The arrests and seizures came following tip-offs from members of the public, and that all five suspects knew each other, he said.
Helmi also said the suspects were believed to be from the same syndicate and had been distributing drugs in Sik, Gurun and Pendang over the past two to three months.
"We believe that the woman who tested positive for drugs in the first raid had been involved (in drug trafficking) with her husband. We are still investigating whether the second female suspect had also been involved," he said.
Helmi said all the suspects were being remanded for seven days beginning today to facilitate investigations under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952. – Bernama
