Foreigners take advantage of Ramadan to reap profits

KOTA BARU: Many foreigners, especially from a neighbouring country, who entered the country during Ramadan to collect donations or charity, are said to earn as much as RM300 a day.
Principal Assistant Director (Legal and Enforcement Division) in the Kelantan Social Welfare Department (JKM) Nazri Hussin said the lucrative income was an attraction for these foreigners to come into this country.
"In the operations which we conducted, we found that they usually claim they were collecting donations to build a religious school in their country, but the documents they produce are suspicious and we believe were reprinted to dupe people into giving them money," he told reporters here today.
He said in the operations conducted together with the Kota Baru Municipal Council (MPKB) at the Ramadan Bazaar at the Sultan Muhammad IV Stadium and the Ramadan Bazaar at Pengkalan Chepa here today, six individuals from a neighbouring country were detained for collecting donations without a permit.
"Our investigations found that they came here to collect donation in conjunction with Ramadan, and at each bazaar, they were able to collect up to RM300," he said.
Nazri advised the public to donate through legitimate channels so that they know where their money is going to, and to curb begging activities. — Bernama
