GEORGE TOWN: The corruption trial involving former Penang chief minister Lim Guan Eng and businesswoman Phang Li Koon has been postponed to July 30 for case management, to enable the new Attorney-General (AG) to review the case.
The case was put on hold until the mentioned date after Lim's defence counsel Ramkarpal Singh asked for postponement before Justice Datuk Hadhariah Syed Ismail at the High Court here today.
Ramkarpal requested for the postponement as Lim and the lead counsel Gobind Singh Deo were both in the country's administrative capital in Putrajaya to be sworn in as Finance Minister and Multimedia and Communications and Information Minister, respectively.
He said a new representation will be filed to the new AG who will be appointed by that time.
"We prefer the new AG to make a representation on the case," he said.
Hadhariah noted many changes had happened, saying the court had no choice but to postpone the case.
The new Attorney-General is expected to be appointed by July following Pakatan Harapan's (PH) historic win on May 9.
When met outside the courtroom, Ramkarpal said a proposal will also be made to the new AG for the case to be dropped, but it will be up whoever assumes the post whether it will be accepted.
Deputy public prosecutor Datuk Masri Mohd Daud, meanwhile, said Lim's defence counsel was free to file any representation.
"If they want to make a new representation, we cannot stop them, " he said.
He said he had no say if they want to refer the matter to the new AG, adding that he also does not know when the new Attorney-General is coming in.
"So I reserve comment," he added.
