GEORGE TOWN: Penang must ensure that promises listed in the Pakatan Harapan electoral manifesto are executed, said PKR vice – president Nurul Izzah Anwar.
She said that promises made to the people must be given utmost priority as there was much expectation given to the new federal administration under Pakatan.
Nurul Izzah, who won the Permatang Pauh parliamentary seat, said that Penang has the potential to become an exemplary state under Pakatan since it has undergone two terms previously under the former Opposition coalition.
"We hope that the local authorities will also strive to improve their lot particularly on the issue of flood mitigation," she said after making her maiden visit to the Seberang Prai Municipality (MPSP) headquarters here.
The local council is the biggest in the country in terms of size and households that comes under its purview – stretching from Butterworth to Bukit Mertajam, Nibong Tebal and Kepala Batas.
According to Nurul Izzah, there was a need to pay more attention to curtailing flash floods while at the same time to encourage quality living such as erecting bicycle lanes so ratepayers can conduct healthy activities.
Meanwhile, the MPSP secretary Rosnani Mahmood said that the main issue which hampers the flow of water is the acute blockage of the drainage system.
The Department of Drainage and Irrigation (DID) have been tasked to help the local authorities in handling this main issue, said Rosnani.
Later, Nurul Izzah paid a private courtesy call on Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow where they were believed to have discussed about empowering the local authorities.
