SHAH ALAM: The police have detained four men linked to last Friday's goldsmith robbery at a shopping mall in Damansara Jaya, Petaling Jaya.
The suspects were picked up a day after the heist which saw three of six robbers gunned down in a shootout with the police.
Selangor police chief, Datuk Mazlan Mansor said the first suspect was arrested during a raid at a house in Bukit Beruntung, Rawang at 1.15am.
He said following interrogation, the suspect led the police to another house in Bukit Sentosa, Rawang where another man – who was injured in the shootout with the police – was picked up at 3pm, on the same day.
"The remaining two members of the robbery gang were later detained when they surrendered at the Jerantut police headquarters (IPD) about 5pm on the same day," Mazlan told a media conference at the Selangor police contingent headquarters here today.
In connection with the arrests of the four suspects, aged 22 and 30, the police also seized an assortment of pistols and recovered part of the jewellery worth about RM400,000.
Mazlan said the police were in the midst of tracking down three suspected accomplices of the group which was deemed dangerous as they were carrying firearms.
"With the arrests, we believe we have solved at least eight robbery cases in Selangor, Kuala Lumpur and Negri Sembilan," he added.
The suspects were remanded for seven days until May 26. The case is investigated under Section 3 of the Firearms (Increased Penalties) Act 1971, Section 395/397 and Section 307 of the Penal Code.
In the 5pm incident on Friday, six men wearing full-face helmets, three of whom were armed with pistols, stormed into the goldsmith shop and took away an undisclosed amount of jewellery.
In a shootout subsequently, the police shot dead three of the robbers as they were fleeing from the scene.
The police believe more than eight men were involved in the heist. — Bernama
