IGP: Police may reopen Altantuya case

PUTRAJAYA: The police may reopen an investigation paper into the murder of Mongolian model Altantuya Shaariibuu that took place about 12 years ago.
"I have to look back into this matter and discuss with my officers about opening a report. We will update from time to time," Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Mohamad Fuzi Haron told a press conference, here, today.
Mohamad Fuzi said this when asked by reporters if the police were planning to reopen the case following calls from various quarters.
Mongolia's president Battulga Khaltmaa and Pakatan Harapan's (PH) Bukit Gelugor MP Ramkarpal Singh were among those who called on the authorities to reopen investigations into the murder of Altantuya, following PH's win in the general election.
Ramkarpal also called for the setting up of a Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) to determine who ordered Altantuya's murder.
Altantuya was believed to have been shot dead before her body was blown with C4 explosives at a forest near the Subang Dam in Puncak Alam, Shah Alam, in 2006.
Former police officer Sirul Azhar Umar, who was convicted of Altantuya's murder, had previously said he was acting on orders from someone higher up, but did not mention any names.
Sirul, who is currently seeking asylum in Australia, and his accomplice Azilah Hadri were convicted of murdering Altantuya and were sentenced to death in 2009.
It was overturned by the Court of Appeal in 2013 but the Federal Court later upheld the death sentence upon the prosecution's appeal in 2015.
