PETALING JAYA: More local artistes have come forward to raise RM500,000 for children with cerebral palsy through a badminton charity programme.
The Forever Grand Asia Celebrity Charity Badminton (GACC) Sdn Bhd has brought together local and international celebrities for a charitable cause through friendly matches.
Celebrities like David Kong, Jeffery Ooi, Andy Loke and Jack Ju, who play badminton for leisure, will now take part in a tournament to contribute to for the Spastic Children's Association of Selangor & Federal Territory building development projects.
The tournament, which is scheduled on July 14, will see friendly matches between various local singers and models.
"For some of us this is a first time participation in a sports charity event. It is common for singers to participate in a charity concert or stage shows but it is interesting and fun to contribute to the community through sports," Kong said.
Loke, who said this is the second time he is playing badminton for charity, said more celebrities should join in the fun for a good cause.
"This is my first to join this kind of sports charity programme. I am looking forward to the friendly matches because we usually play badminton as a hobby but now we are turning hobby into a charity," Ooi said.
Kong urged all the fans of the respective celebrities to come forward and support this charity, which will benefit children born with cerebral palsy.
Understanding the specific needs of children with this condition, Forever GACC founder Poris Lee said this fundraising tournament and gala night will help with the reconstruction of a building for the spastic children's association.
"We hope to raise half a million for the spastic children. But the support has not been very encouraging so far. We need more people to come forward to support this good cause.
"Over the years, our good and successful track records in organising various charitable events had raised funds for the underprivileged groups in our society," she said.
Spastic children have specific needs and there are only three rehabilitation centres nationwide which provides life-long education, living skills and vocational training, sports training, occupational therapy and employment in our sheltered workshops.
GACCB is scheduled to take place at Stadium Titiwangsa on July 14 and 15 while the gala dinner will be at Berjaya Times Square Hotel on July 15.
