Bersih submits electoral action plan to Institutional Reform Committee

KUALA LUMPUR: Bersih 2.0 has submitted an electoral action plan which proposes reforms to the Malaysian electoral and parliamentary process for consideration, to the Institutional Reform Committee (IRC).
Bersih's acting chairman Shahrul Aman Mohd Saari (pix) handed over the proposals to the IRC secretariat at about 10.30am today at their current base of operations at Menara Ilham here.
"Although work has started with the 1MDB issue, we need electoral reforms to start immediately," he said.
"We need to restore independence and function of the Election commission," he said outside the building.
Bersih has called for the EC chairman, his deputy and five other members of the EC to resign immediately after having lost the confidence of the public.
"They must resign immediately as they have lost public confidence and were complicit in electoral malpractice," he said.
Bersih also called for IRC to suspend all seven in the meantime before their resignation.
The IRC, set up under the Council of Eminent Persons, comprises retired Court of Appeal judges Datuk KC Vohrah and Datuk Mah Weng Kwai, National Patriots Association president Datuk Mohamed Arshad Raji, constitutional law expert Prof Datuk Dr Shad Saleem Faruqi and National Human Rights Society (Hakam) president Datuk Ambiga Sreenevasan.
On Monday the committee urged all those wishing to speak up about institutions that have failed in their functions according to the law to submit written representations to them.
