Ex-Ekamatra guitarist handed 10 years jail for causing death

ALOR STAR: The Sessions Court here today sentenced a former guitarist of Ekamatra, a popular rock group in the 1990s, to 10 years jail for causing the death of an old woman when breaking into the victim's home last February.
Md Nurul Azman Salilholdin @ Salilhaldin, 44, from Johor, had pleaded guilty after the charge was read out to him before Sessions Judge Juraidah Abbas.
When meting out the sentence, Juraidah said she was satisfied with the prosecution's case and also took into account the confession of the accused.
"After hearing all the arguments and facts submitted, besides the plea of the accused, I convict the accused under Section 304 (a) of the Penal Code," she said.
The accused was charged with causing the death of Kau Fu Eng, 71, between 2pm and 6pm on Feb 25 at a house No 217, Taman Malaysia, here.
Under Section 304 (a) of the Penal Code, he was liable to be jailed a maximum of 30 years and could also be fined.
In mitigation, the accused asked to be jailed from the date of his arrest and be sent to the Kajang Prison to facilitate family visits.
Deputy Public Prosecutor, Rehab Abdul Shukur had urged the court to impose a commensurate penalty taking into account public interest as what the accused did was serious.
The accused, however, was not represented while the victim's family appointed counsel Jason Khor to maintain a watching brief. — Bernama
