KUALA LUMPUR: The Bersih 2.0 has urged Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad to immediately sack seven members of the Election Commission (EC) for allegedly losing public trust and abetting in misconduct during the recent 14th General Election (GE14).
Its acting chairman, Shahrul Aman Mohd Saari said Bersih 2.0 also wanted the duties of EC chairman Tan Sri Mohd Hashim Abdullah and his deputy, Tan Sri Othman Mahmood to be suspended to facilitate investigations.
"Despite strong evidence and management problems during GE14, neither the EC members nor EC officials took the responsibility.
"Until today, Mohd Hashim, Othman and five other EC members still hold their respective positions without shame," he said.
Shahrul Aman said this after handing over the Electoral Reform Action Plan proposal paper to the representative of the secretariat of the Institutional Reform Committee under the Council of Eminent Persons, Zawiyah Mohammad Yusof at Menara Ilham here today.
He said Bersih 2.0 also called on the committee and the government to pay attention to reformation in the action plan based on the 100-day period and the next two years.
He added the most crucial action was to restore the independence and functions of the EC.
"Reformation will not happen if the existing EC is maintained," he noted. — Bernama
