KOTA KINABALU: A foreigner accused of living in the country without valid documents provided a moment of comedy in the court today.
Issam Bakri, 42, submitted a hand-drawn picture of himself when prompted to show valid proof of his citizenship in the state of Sabah.
Sessions court judge Azreena Aziz who was not amused asked: "Is this your MyKad?"
The picture drawn by Issam depicted a man wearing a shirt, with two round disc-shaped drawings purportedly representing his fingerprints.
Issam pleaded not guilty when he was first charged on April 26, for not having a legal identification document to live in Sabah. He maintained his innocence when the allegations were read out to him yesterday.
Unruffled, he claimed to have the necessary documents to deny the charge, and with the court's permission, removed the painting from his pocket.
The activity in the court suddenly ceased when the prosecutor Sabrina Jinius handed the "MyKad" to Azreena.
The judge asked Issam three times whether the paper was the document he meant and received an affirmative from Issam all three times.
Azreena then ordered Issam to be sent to the mental hospital of Bukit Padang to undergo a mental examination.
