Petekma hopes PH government can revive taxi industry

KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Taxi Drivers, Limousine and Car Rental Operators Association (Petekma) hopes the Pakatan Harapan government will bring positive changes and revitalise the country's taxi industry.
Its president Mohd Syahrir Abdul Aziz said the taxi drivers were also ready to improve their services to enable the taxi service to become a passenger option.
"Previously, we submitted various proposals for improvements but our recommendations were ignored (by the previous government). If at all there was aid or incentive it was one-off in nature. It did not result in any change.
"So with this new government we want a good change so we can be competitive again," he told reporters after meeting with the Government Advisory Council at Menara Ilham here today.
In his one-hour meeting, he stated among others Petekma's stand which wanted the government to ban Uber and GrabCar taxi services that were deemed to be affecting their income all these while.
He said the government needed to be more concerned about the fate of 67,000 taxi drivers nationwide as they were trained and were more qualified taxi drivers compared to Uber and Grabcar service drivers. — Bernama
