IGP: Reopening Altantuya case will depend on new leads, reports

KUALA LUMPUR: The police today said that any move to reopen the investigation into the murder of Altantuya Shaariibuu will depend on whether they obtain any new lead into the case that took place about 12 year ago.
Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Mohamad Fuzi Harun said at present, police have yet to obtain any new evidence or report in relation to the Mongolian model's sensational murder in 2006.
"At the moment, the police have not received any reports to reopen the case. We will reopen (investigation) if new evidence surfaces," he told reporters after handing out Hari Raya cookies in Bukit Aman, here.
Altantuya was believed to have been shot dead before her body was blown with C4 explosives at a forest near the Subang Dam in Puncak Alam, Shah Alam, in 2006.
Mongolia's president Battulga Khaltmaa and Pakatan Harapan's (PH) Bukit Gelugor MP Ramkarpal Singh had recently called on the authorities to reopen investigations into the murder of Altantuya, following PH's win in the general election.
Former police officer Sirul Azhar Umar, who is currently seeking asylum from a detention centre in Australia, had previously said he was acting on orders from someone higher up, but did not mention any names.
Sirul and his accomplice Azilah Hadri were convicted of murdering Altantuya and were sentenced to death in 2009.
However, the ruling was overturned by the Court of Appeal in 2013, but the Federal Court later upheld the death sentence upon the prosecution's appeal in 2015.
