BANGKOK: The good performance by young singles national players such as Lee Jii Zia and Leong Jun Hao at the Thomas Cup this time is a bit of a relief to Datuk Lee Chong Wei.
This is because according to him if they continue to perform well in the future then he can start thinking about 'hanging up his racket' because the young line-up is ready to continue the Malaysian badminton challenge.
"Yes, Lee (Zii Jia) and Leong (Jun Hao) have performed well. They need to continue their good performance by participating in more tournaments and raising their rankings," he told Malaysian journalists at the Impact Arena here, today.
Zii Jia needs to raise his ranking by participating in tournaments under the Super Series.
Earlier, the 36-year-old player gave Malaysia the first point in the Thomas Cup quarter-finals against Indonesia after defeating young player, Anthony Sinisuka Ginting.
Chong Wei beat 21-year-old Ginting, 21-19 and 21-16 in a match that lasted 49 minutes.
According to him, Ginting, who is also the world number 13, has a bright future.
"Give him one to two years and he will be among the top 10 players in the world," he said, adding that during the recent Asia Championship meet, Ginting had dragged him into rubber sets.
The young Indonesian player, according to him, has high potential. — Bernama
