Local council elections within three years, says Zuraida

KUALA LUMPUR: Local council elections can be held within three years, Housing and Local Government Minister Zuraida Kamaruddin said today.
She based her expectation on her observations on the holding of council elections in Indonesia and New Zealand.
"However, I will need to review the mechanisms needed. Hopefully, it can be implemented either in Selangor or Penang. Otherwise, it will be done in stages," she said in a news conference held here today.
She was responding to a media inquiry on the progress of the election which is under her ministry's purview.
Earlier, she urged the People's Housing Project transit flats residents at Bukit Jalil to form an ad hoc committee to address their water issues which went unsolved since 2015.
"I have informed them to establish a ten-person committee and list down the problems that they have faced. The situation is dire because they have faced water shortage which could last for days," she said.
She added that a management contractor has to be appointed through an open tender.
