PETALING JAYA: More than 23,000 Malaysians at the time of publication have signed an online petition calling for Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad to be nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize.
The petition titled "Tun Dr. Mahathir bin Mohamad nomination for the Nobel Peace Prize 2018" on change.org was initiated by Alexandria Abishegam. She said the petition is in recognition of his determination as a veteran to return to politics.
"Casting aside his own political prejudices, standing shoulder to shoulder with the Opposition parties and leaders such as (Datuk Seri) Anwar Ibrahim, Lim Kit Siang, Mohamad Sabu and others to save our nation, Tun Dr Mahathir focused on the importance of transparency, democracy and rule of law for Malaysia," she said.
She believed that Mahathir is a leader to be emulated for admitting his own faults in the past.
"Though all manner of underhanded 'tricks' were used to prevent a fair election, Tun Dr Mahathir inspired millions of voters – 'the ordinary rakyat' – cutting across all racial and religious backgrounds to fight back by voting and speaking out in a peaceful and non-violent way.
"The victory of the Tun Dr Mahathir-led coalition, displacing the ruling Barisan Nasional party after more than 60 years in power, was not only stunning and historic but has brought with it a new dawn of 'Malaysia Baru'," she said.
She went on to describe him akin to being the "Nelson Mandela" of Malaysia for ensuring a peaceful transfer of power.
"For giving millions of us ordinary Malaysians hope, renewed faith and most important of all 'PRIDE' in our Malaysia, I urge all of you to support this nomination of Tun Dr Mahathir for the 2018 Nobel Peace Prize," she added.
