BUKIT MERTAJAM: Police are not ruling out the possibility that the attempted murder of a smartphone dealer in Taman Sentosa could be linked to loan sharks.
Central Seberang Prai district police chief ACP Nik Ros Azhan Nik Abdul Hamid said police are looking at all angles in the attempted murder of the 22-year-old on Saturday.
"Although we are zeroing in on the possibility, it's not him (victim) who is involved.
Investigations are still ongoing," he said when contacted. Nik Ros Azhan also said a suspect has been detained to assist in the probe.
On Saturday, the 22-year old victim had just finished having a meal at a popular food court and was driving away from the place, when a lone hitman struck from inside a waiting car.
The victim had stopped his car at a traffic light junction when the lights turned red.
The gunman, who was clad in a ski mask, pulled up next to him and lowered the left window of his car before opening fire at the victim.
It was learnt that the heavily tinted window of the victim's car could have obstructed the hitman from having a clear view of his intended target.
The suspect, aged in his 40s, was detained by detectives around 10.30pm on Saturday in Tanjong Tokong based on an anonymous tip-off.
The suspect has since been remanded until Friday to facilitate investigations into the incident which shocked residents here, as the shootout occurred several metres away from the St Anne's Church.
The victim who suffered four bullet wounds to his chest and shoulder is recuperating at the Seberang Jaya Hospital.
The assailant had fired up to 10 rounds using a revolver.
