KUALA LUMPUR: Communications and Multimedia Minister Gobind Singh Deo has given his backing to the possibility of RTM (Radio Television Malaysia) airing the FIFA World Cup 2018 live when the global football tournament kicks off on June 14.
He said RTM is mulling the possibility of airing the live telecast of the World Cup and added that he supports the move as it will provide additional revenue to the national broadcaster.
"I am supportive of the live telecast as it will allow more Malaysians to enjoy the telecast and increase revenue and views for RTM," he told reporters after visiting the national news agency Bernama here today
He added that he will bring up the matter at the next Cabinet meeting this Wednesday.
"My ministry has forwarded the suggestion to the government so that we could get permission to air the World Cup live when it starts on June 14.
"I will bring this issue to the Cabinet on Wednesday, and hopefully, we will get a good answer. I think this is one of the ways in which we can promote RTM. I think this is what we need to do to increase viewership for RTM," he added.
Yesterday, Muar MP Syed Saddiq Abdul Rahman said that he will meet with the government and Astro to discuss the possibility of airing the 2018 FIFA World Cup matches live.
The Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia Youth chief said he will try setting up a meeting with Gobind to discuss the matter.
