RECENTLY, a non-governmental organisation (NGO) known as Jabat was thrust into the spotlight after a Facebook post went viral depicting a group of men harassing a convenience store staff to remove all alcohol sold in the shop.
The incident which took place in Manjoi, Perak saw the organisation's representatives objecting loudly to the sale of alcohol in the area as the township has a majority of Malay Muslims.
They demanded the store's staff to empty the fridge of alcohol and stood watch as an employee cleared the bottles and cans.

They even got the whole incident recorded to prevent them from being accused of physically harming the staff or items in the store. They were quoted as saying:
"It's not like we want to do any damage to the store but if they refused to remove the alcohol then we will have to smash it. They don't want to listen when we are asking them nicely to do so."
After the store had cleared the alcohol drinks in the refrigerator, the group headed to the police station to lodge a report.
In a separate video, a spokesman and few others gathered while holding copies of the report and announced that they had successfully stopped the sale of alcohol in Manjoi, which consisted of 97% Malay Muslims.
The spokesman also reminded other stores that they should take note and be considerate of this issue.
Their actions, however, were hotly debated by netizens with some condemning them.
Several fellow Muslims disagreed with them, saying that the fridge was already labelled as non-halal and they should respect other non-Muslims in the area although they were a minority while some praised the group for their bravery.
