PUTRAJAYA: A housewife who gained notoriety after being granted a good behaviour bond for abusing her maid was granted a stay of execution against her jail term by the Court of Appeal.
Rozita Mohamad Ali, 44, was granted a stay pending a review of the eight-year jail sentence by the High Court which overturned the good behaviour bond granted by the lower court.
The three-man panel chaired by Datuk Ahmadi Asnawi unanimously allowed Rozita's application but imposed a bail of RM25,000 in two sureties and impounded her passport.
She was also ordered to report to the Damansara Utama police station every two weeks.
Rozita filed the application saying that the Shah Alam High Court could not summarily revise her case when the public prosecutor had filed an appeal against the sessions court ruling.
She pleaded guilty to causing grievous injuries to her maid Suyanti Sutrinso, 19, after a video of the incident went viral on social media.
Judicial Commissioner Datuk Seri Tun Abd Majid Tun Hamzah from the Shah Alam High Court sentenced Rozita to a eight-year jail term after finding the sentence by the sessions court of a five-year good behaviour bond and a surety of RM20,000 to be inappropriate to the gravity of the crime that was committed.
On Dec 21, 2016, Suyanti was found seriously injured lying next a drain by a security guard who then alerted a resident in the neighbourhood.
Suyanti sustained multiple injuries to her eyes, both her legs, her hands and internal organs.
She also suffered a broken scapula and injuries to her right lung as well as a blood clot near her brain and a fracture to her cheekbone.
