KUALA LUMPUR: Ousted Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak would not be able to enjoy the rights and privileges of a past prime minister because he is under investigation.
Saying this, Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad said if Najib is found innocent in the investigation then his rights as a former prime minister would be restored.
"He doesn't have the rights of the past prime ministers at the moment," said Mahathir at a Federal police break fast event at Bukit Aman police headquarters here today.
Mahathir was responding to Najib's comments on Facebook that his security detail had been withdrawn.
Meanwhile, Bernama reports that the police have denied claims by Najib that all security officers assigned to him previously except for an Aide De Camp (ADC), had been withdrawn.
Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Mohamad Fuzi Harun said police did not withdraw the security detail given to Najib entirely, but only the number of personnel had been reduced.
"Every former prime minister has certain entitlements, but the number of members on duty will not be the same as before, and we are only following the set standard operating procedures (SOPs).
"However, personnel on duty such as the ADC, driver and personal bodyguards are still stationed for the safety of Najib himself and his wife Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor," he told reporters after Mahathir's breaking of fast ceremony with Royal Malaysia Police staff and personnel of agencies under the Home Ministry at the Bukit Aman Mosque here tonight.
Also present was Home Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.
Najib confirmed that police and security escort were revoked officially by the federal government today.
He confirmed the matter on his Facebook page, where he thanked his security personnel.
"Today I saluted and said goodbye to my team of police escorts, Special Action Unit (UTK), escort officers and personnel who were in charge to provide security for my family at the Prime Minister's Office and the PM's official residence of Seri Perdana," he said.
Najib said for the past few weeks, all but one officer posted under him was withdrawn in a new directive by the federal government.
"The remaining officer is an aide-de-camp to me," he added.
Najib's vehicle and his convoy left his Taman Duta private residence around 6.40pm, with a noticeable lack of police outriders that usually accompany the entourage when Najib leaves his private residence.
He said he and his family would never forget the loyalty, friendship, and contribution shared between them for the past nine years, including officers that served during his term as deputy Prime Minister.
"It cannot be denied that these officers shed tears when we said our farewells to one another," the Pekan MP said.
"I wish them good luck and hope that they will continue to serve the new government with the same dedication and loyalty shown while under me.
"I hope the new government will look after the officers' wellbeing because these personnel are dedicated individuals who will serve the government of today with their utmost loyalty," Najib added.
