Malacca disbands six depts, units, reviews two other agencies

MALACCA: Effective tomorrow, the Malacca Government will disband six departments and units under the Malacca Chief Minister's Department (JKMM) to prevent overlapping of functions and roles, in addition to reviewing the status of two other agencies.
Chief Minister Adly Zahari said the agencies to be disbanded were Bahagian Sahabat Belia (BSB), Bumiputra Economic Empowerment Unit (UPEB), Malacca State Economic Consultative Council (MAPEN), Road Safety Council (MKJR), Community Service Division (BKM) and State Landscape Department.
"For example, BSB has overlapping functions with the Department of Youth and Sports, while BKM, with the Social Welfare Department.
"As for UPEB and MAPEN, the functions will be coordinated by the State Economic Planning Unit (UPEN), MKJR under the State Road Safety Department (JKJR), while the State Landscape Department will be coordinated by the Local Government Unit, JKMM," he told a press conference after the State Exco meeting at Seri Negri, Ayer Keroh here today.
He said the two other agencies, namely the Malay and Islamic World Secretariat (DMDI) and DMDI International Education Sdn Bhd would be reviewed over their roles and needs to the community and the state's development.
In the meantime, Adly said the state government had decided to cancel the construction of the new Historical Malacca City Council (MBMB) building in Klebang here, taking into account the long-term effect of the financial costs to be incurred.
"Although the development status has reached 17 per cent, we nevertheless, need to take into account the long-term impact that MBMB has to pay RM16.4 million a year for 25 years," he noted.
In another development, Adly said the people in the state could change the status of Malay settlement lease of land to that of Malay Customary Land with a nominal premium payment of RM1,000.
"Hence, we hope the Malay community seizes this opportunity to convert the lease of land to Malay Customary Land," he said.
Meanwhile, Adly said the state government had also reached an agreement to appoint former Kuala Lumpur mayor, Datuk Seri Ruslin Hassan as chief executive officer of the Malacca State Development Corporation, replacing Datuk Azmi Hussien who would be appointed as MBMB mayor, effective tomorrow. — Bernama
