KUALA LUMPUR: A Bangladeshi man was fined RM800, in default six months' jail, by the Magistrate's Court here today for violating the terms of his visit pass, by working in the country last month.
Magistrate Namirah Hanum Mohamed Albaki meted out the sentence on Sekendar Ali, 42, after he pleaded guilty to working as an assistant at a gambling outlet here.
The father of two was charged with committing the offence at Batu 4 1/2, Jalan Ipoh, Sentul here at 10.10pm on May 19.
The charge, under Rule 11(7) of the Immigration Regulations 1959/63 (Amendment 2002), punishable under Rule 39 (b) of the same regulations, provides a maximum fine of RM2,000 or imprisonment of up to six months or both, upon conviction.
Deputy public prosecutor Afiq Nazrin Zaharinan, who prosecuted, applied for a punitive sentence as a lesson but the accused represented by counsel Muhammad Afif Che Had appealed for leniency as his client was the sole breadwinner of his family in Bangladesh. — Bernama
