BUTTERWORTH: There seems to be some confusion following Putrajaya decision to review Malaysian Islamic Development Department (Jakim), said PKR secretary-general Datuk Saifuddin Nasution.
He said Prime Minister Tun Mahathir Mohamad announced was to review the institution, not abolish it.
He said Jakim is important, and any review would include upgrading its role and its function.
"I don't think it will abolished, any changes on that national institution will only to improve it and to make it play it role better," he said during a press conference after handing over Hari Raya aid to needy students at Jalan Baru shopping mall.
Saifuddin who is also Pantai Jerjak assemblymen said he would bring the matter up in the PH presidential council meeting tomorrow.
On Wednesday, Mahathir announced that a committee would be appointed to decide whether the institution should continue with its current role or "revert to its original purpose".
He said the review is necessary to ensure that Jakim represents Islam in a positive way.
