Ringgit ends marginally higher against US dollar

KUALA LUMPUR: The ringgit was traded slightly higher against the US dollar on the first day of the second half of the year, partly due to external uncertainties that have contributed towards weakness in emerging markets.
At 6pm, the local unit was quoted at 3.9770/9800 from 3.9780/9820 yesterday.
FXTM Global Head of Currency Strategy and Market Research Jameel Ahmad said the political crisis in Italy impacted global markets and encouraged a turmoil earlier this week.
"That, coupled with news that President Trump had moved forward by imposing trade tariffs prompted the mixed performance on Asian foreign exchange markets on Friday," he told Bernama.
Meanwhile, the local unit was mixed against a basket of currencies.
The ringgit strengthened against the British pound to 5.2902/2946 from 5.3059/3116 on Thursday and almost unchanged against the euro at 4.6551/6594 from 4.6551/6605 previously.
It was higher against the Singapore dollar to 2.9428/9761 from 2.9749/9785 and improved against the yen to 3.6393/6430 from 3.6542/6589 on Thursday. — Bernama
