7 dead in two separate accidents in Maran and Pagoh

PETALING JAYA: Seven people were killed and 29 others were injured in two separate collisions today.
In Maran, Pahang, a family outing to Kuala Lumpur and Genting Highlands turned into tragedy when four of them were killed, while two were seriously injured in an accident at KM161 on the East Coast Highway 1 (LPT1) at about 8.30am, Bernama reports.
Maran district police chief DSP Norzamri Abd Rahman said the accident occurred near the Maran Rest and Service (R & R) area and the dead were identified as Azian Abdullah, 50, and her children, Fatin Najwa Mazlan, 27, Fatin Nur Adriana, 15, and Mohamad Danish Najmi, 10.
Azian's two other children, Mohd Shahrul Ikhram Mazlan, 20, and Fatin Nur Athirah, 19, were seriously injured and sent to the Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah Hospital, Temerloh, he said.
"Initial investigations revealed that the car driven by Mohd Shahrul Ikhram skidded and crashed into a guardrail on the left," he said.
"The four suffered fatal head and body injuries. Their bodies were sent to the Jengka Hospital for post-mortems," he added.
In Muar, three people were killed and 25 others suffered minor injures in a collision of three vehicles near the Pagoh exit (southbound) of the Km142.4 North-South Expressway around 1pm here.
Muar Fire and Rescue Department chief Marzuki Ismail said the dead were Shuaib K. K. Mohamed Unny, 50, the bus driver, and two passengers who have yet to be identified.
"The co-driver and 25 other passengers are safe, as well as the drivers of the trailer and tanker involved. The cause of the accident is still being determined," he said in a statement here today.
"The bodies of the victims were handed over to police for further action," he added.
Marzuki said the department received a distress call about the incident at 1.08pm and 23 personnel and five fire-engines from Muar and Bukit Gambir were rushed to the scene.
The rescue operations ended at 2.10pm.
The injured victims were sent to Hospital Sultanah Fatimah for treatment.
According to witnesses, the three deceased were thrown out of the bus due to the collision.
There were a total of 27 people in the bus, including the bus driver and his assistant, when the accident happened.
The crash caused a massive traffic jam stretching up to 4km on both sides of he highway.
