KUALA LUMPUR: Home Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said he is leaving it to the special investigation committee and taskforce set up by the government to focus on the 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) scandal to take the appropriate action in their investigations.
"They have been given full authority to determine appropriate steps to be taken in terms of legal action related to the scandal over the 1MDB," he told a press conference after visiting the Bukit Aman police headquarters here today.
Muhyiddin was responding to a question on the possibility of former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak being arrested and charged in connection with the scandal.
On May 22 and 24, Najib had his statement recorded at the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission headquarters to facilitate the investigations into SRC International Sdn Bhd, a subsidiary company of 1MDB until 2012 when it was placed under the Finance Ministry.
Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad had earlier said that he expected Najib to be charged over the allegations that the former prime minister had embezzled millions of American dollars from the 1MDB fund.
The 1MDB special taskforce was set up by the Prime Minister's Office, while the 1MDB investigation committee was set up by the Council of Eminent Persons.
In another development, Muhyiddin said a special committee, chaired by Mahathir who is also Pakatan Harapan chairman, had been formed to look into the citizenship problems faced by residents in the country.
He said the formation of the committee was agreed upon by PH top leadership during their meeting over a week ago. — Bernama
