KUALA LUMPUR: Former Attorney-General Tan Sri Mohamed Apandi Ali has given a word of caution to Tommy Thomas who has been appointed as the new AG.
"Congratulations. All the best. Good luck in the hot seat. It is not a walk in the park job. It is a tough one," he texted to theSun today.
Meanwhile, legal experts have hailed Thomas's new role.
Lawyers for Liberty executive director Eric Paulsen described the appoinment as "an excellent choice".
"The appointment of Tommy Thomas as AG is an excellent choice. He is a well respected constitutional, civil and corporate lawyer with more than 40 years experience. More importantly, he is a man of integrity who only has the best interest of the nation at heart.
"His leadership at the AGC will be crucial as there are much needed reforms that are being planned by the PH govt as promised in their manifesto. I am sure he will do well to right all the previous wrongs, restore accountability and the rule of law back to Malaysia," he told theSun when contacted today.
Civil rights lawyer Andrew Khoo echoed this sentiment.
"I think he is well-suited to advise the new government on the many constitutional-related issues that the country is currently facing, as well as the institutional and law reform proposals that the new government is considering implementing," the Bar Council Human Rights co-chairman said.
