KOTA BHARU: The Royal Malaysian Customs Department has intensified efforts to curb smuggling of prohibited items especially firecrackers and fireworks at the border states, ahead of the Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebrations.
Customs assistant director-general (Enforcement) Datuk Zulkifli Yahya said the department has stepped up operations with the cooperation of other enforcement agencies at the border areas.
"Those with information on smuggling activities should inform us (the authorities) for action to be taken," he told Bernama after a breaking-of-fast ceremony here last night.
According to Zulkifli, the smugglers would resort to various tactics to bring in the banned items, including transferring the goods to boats through illegal ports,
He said though firecrackers and fireworks enliven the festive celebrations, the public should be aware that setting off firecrackers could be hazardous and risky. — Bernama
