PETALING JAYA: Wanted fugitive Datuk Seri Jamal Md Yunos has confirmed that he will be contesting the Umno Youth chief position in the party polls.
Jamal, who is also Sungai Besar Umno division chief, made the announcement through a Facebook posting with a picture of his candidate form for the position on Tuesday.
"Alhamdulillah. The candidate form has been filled. Umno today and forevermore," he said.
The Umno Youth chief position is also being contested by Umno Youth deputy chief Khairul Azwan Harun, former Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki, and Bandar Taman Chempaka Umno Youth information chief Syed Rosli Jamalullail Syed Harman.
Police launched a manhunt for Jamal after he was found missing from his ward at the Ampang Puteri Specialist Hospital on May 25.
Jamal then promised to present himself to the police on May 30, but failed to do so.
He also released a video of himself at an oil palm plantation, in which he claimed there was an effort by certain parties to direct the police to frame him at all costs and called on Home Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin to protect him.
Jamal is currently being investigated for at least six offences, including creating a public nuisance by breaking crates of beer at the Selangor state secretariat building on Oct 5 last year, to protest the proposed Better Beer Festival 2017, that was later cancelled for unrelated reasons.
An arrest warrant for him was issued on June 1 for the offence of escaping or resisting police custody.
He also claimed that the police were wasting time by seeking Interpol's help because he had only committed minor offences, adding that he was still in the country.
In a separate posting, he confirmed that he would also be defending his Sungai Besar Umno division chief position.
