The future of television is here

SAMSUNG Electronics Malaysia recently unveiled its 2018 lineup of QLED televisions which, according to Samsung Malaysia Electronics president Yoonsoo Kim, is “the most cutting-edge and contemporary-designed TV based on the modern consumer’s lifestyle”.
Kim added: “We are proud to say that our consumers will be able to enjoy their content, and how they interact with their devices, on a redefined level.”
Larger screens, clearer images, and easy installation are the tenets of design for Samsung’s latest line-up of TVs, which also showcases Samsung’s vision for the future of television.
With that in mind, Samsung highlighted three key technologies featured in its 2018 QLED TVs.
To produce clearer images, Samsung QLED TVs feature the new Direct Full Array technology.
In layman’s term, the TVs could deliver darker blacks and brighter whites by leveraging on the display panel’s ability to both darken and brighten small zones of the display as needed.
To further enhance the viewing experience, the Anti-reflection technology reduces glare, increases viewing angle, and makes the images on screen look that much better.
Models that are bigger than 55in have the added advantage of the Q Engine, which upscales onscreen content to UHD, also known as 4K.
In other words, the technology increases the resolution of media displayed on the TV, to take full advantage of the TV’s higher resolution.
A larger, more beautiful TV left unused is not only a waste, but can be an eyesore as a thin black window just hanging there on a wall or standing on a table.
To remedy this, Samsung is introducing Magic Screen, an energy-saving function that allows the TV to display images alongside real-time information, such as the weather or news.
Wall-mounted TVs in the line can also mimic the pattern on the wall behind the TV, creating an astonishing visual effect in which the TV blends seamlessly into the wall.
This is done with the use of a smartphone and its built-in camera. Just pair the TV to a smartphone and use an app to take a picture of the TV, including the wall surrounding it, while it is already installed on the wall.
An algorithm will automatically generate a pattern that matches the wall, turns it into the TV’s wallpaper and virtually makes it disappear.
There are also pre-loaded selections of colours and wall textures to choose from as well.
The technology looks to be an evolution of the company’s The Frame TVs, which turn good displays into a digital frame for beautiful artwork and photos.
To facilitate its simple installation, Samsung is reintroducing its One Invisible Connection feature.
A single thin cable connects the TV display to a separate box. This cable integrates power cables and data lines into one, while the box – which can be located up to 15 metres away – is where the brains, controls, and connectors to the TV recessed.
This elegant solution effectively relocated the clutter and nest of cables away from the TV.
For future expansions, the new QLED TVs are designed to seamlessly work with SmartThings compatible devices to offer users control over their home’s smart technology from their TV.
Additionally, users can access a variety of apps on the QLED TVs.
With the addition of the QLED TVs, Samsung’s 2018 TV lineup will consist of eight flagship models separated into three categories. All the TVs in the portfolio are also Smart TVs.
The 2018 UHD TV lineup consists of the NU7400 (55in and 65in), NU7300 (49in and 55in), and NU7100 (55in, 58in, 65in, and 75in).
The 2018 Premium UHD models are the NU8500 and the NU8000. They feature vibrant crystal colour, HDR10+ compatibility, clean cable solutions, and Smart TV enhancements with One Remote Control.
However, the crowning jewels of Samsung’s 2018 TV lineup are the QLED TVs which come in three models: the Q7F 4K Smart QLED (55in, 65in, and 75in), Q8C 4K Curved Smart TV (55in and 65in), and the Q9f 4K Smart QLED TV (65in and 75in).
Retail prices for the Q7F 4K Smart QLED start at RM8,489 for the 55in display, RM15,093 for the 65in screen, and RM31,131 for the 75in screen.
The Q8C 4K Curved smart TV starts at RM9,433 for the 55in display and RM16,980 for the 65in display.
Samsung’s best, the Q9F 4K Smart QLED TV, will retail at RM18,866 for the 65in screen, and RM34,904 for the 75in display.
To complement the TVs, Samsung also introduced four soundbars: the 320W 2.1 Ch Soundbar with Wireless Subwoofer HW-N450, the 340W 3.1 Ch Soundbar with Wireless Subwoofer HW-N550, the 360W 5.1 Ch Panoramic Soundbar HW-N650, and the 5.1 Ch Wall-Mounted Soundbar HW-NW700.
These soundbars are priced at RM1,225, RM1,602, RM2,451, and RM2,923 respectively.
