GEORGE TOWN: Penang Forum, a loose coalition of non-political civil society groups called on the Pakatan Harapan (PH) state government to review the RM46 billion Penang Transport Master Plan (PTMP) mega project.
In line with the federal call to review all mega projects, the Penang Forum steering committee said this should apply to the PTMP as well.
The project was proposed by the PH government before the 14th general election to tackle traffic congestion in the state.
In a statement to the media, Penang Forum urged the state to review the project in a bid to balance economic growth with environmental protection.
"We call on the PH government, which promises accountability, transparency and openness, to exercise fiscal prudence and to review the present RM46 billion project in line with PH's promise to review all mega projects that may not be advantageous to the people, " it stated.
Penang Forum says the reclamation will also destroy fishing grounds and jeopardise the livelihood of fishermen.
Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow had reportedly said the state would leave it to the federal government to decide on the PTMP.
Penang Forum members had also paid a courtesy call on Chow at his office in Komtar a few days ago.
