PETALING JAYA: The new Bank Negara Malaysia governor has been identified, but the appointment will be announced only after obtaining consent from the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, according to the Prime Minister's Office.
"The Prime Minister's Office wishes to state that with regard to the candidacy of the position of the governor of Bank Negara, although the government has identified a candidate, the individual's name has not been officially presented to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong for His Majesty's consent," the PMO said in a statement today.
Last Wednesday, the Cabinet accepted the resignation of Tan Sri Muhammad Ibrahim following criticism of a RM2 billion land deal between the central bank and the Ministry of Finance earlier this year.
Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng said proceeds from the land deal had been used to bail out 1Malaysia Development Bhd.
Former deputy governor Datuk Nor Shamsiah Mohd Yunus is widely tipped to succeed Muhammad.
