Gan gunning for a top position in upcoming MCA party election

PETALING JAYA: Former MCA vice-president Gan Peng Siew has decided to contest one of the party's top post during its election later this year.
Gan said he would first need to discuss with former party leaders before making a decision on which post he would be contesting.
He refused to be drawn in as to whether he would go for the top post simply by saying no decision had been made.
Following the 14th general election, party president Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai said he would be stepping down following the party's poor showing at the polls.
Asked whether the party would consider leaving Barisan Nasional (BN), Gan said the matter was being discussed by the party's top leadership.
He also said the party has set up the Reform Committee chaired by its deputy president Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong to discuss MCA's political future.
Gan said pulling out of BN could be one of the aspects they may be looking at, but added that the party was one of the founding members of the coalition.
He said the idea had been mooted by the party's grassroots.
"It's one of the options (for MCA to be alone), to be fair to my party leaders let them go through the process," he said at a press conference today.
On whether the party is irrelevant, Gan said the party must work hard to get its act together in order to remain relevant.
He said party leaders are working hard to remain relevant, also citing that it is normal for political parties to go through up and down cycles.
Gan added that being relevant is not the point, for example in 1999 Lim Kit Siang and Karpal Singh lost their seats but this did not make them irrelevant.
