JOHOR BARU: Johor DAP chairman Liew Chin Tong today filed a petition at the Civil High Court here to challenge the results of the 14th General Election (GE14) for the Ayer Hitam parliamentary seat.
The petition was filed by his lawyer, Datuk Yeo Yang Poh, at about 10.30am.
Yeo, when met by reporters, said Liew named MCA deputy president and Ayer Hitam Member of Parliament Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong as the first respondent, with Ayer Hitam returning officer Mohd Hafiz Aliman and the Election Commission (EC) as the second and third respondent , respectively.
Yeo said after studying the matter, he and Liew found that there were sufficient grounds for filing the petition and that there were some rules and laws being violated during the campaign for GE14 in the Ayer Hitam constituency.
"The focus is more on the conduct of the election during the entire campaign period and not just what happened on the polling day.
"This process I think will help us and the country as a whole to see how we can move forward for future elections. Through this petition, we hope that the court will give its opinion which can then guide how future elections may be conducted, " Yeo, who was accompanied by Liew, told reporters after filing the petition.
Also present were Yong Peng assemblyman Chew Peck Choo and Johor DAP secretary Gan Peck Cheng
In the May 9 general election, Liew received 16,773 votes while Wee retained the parliamentary seat with 17,076 votes.
Another contestant, PAS candidate, Mardi Marwan, received 4,975 votes. — Bernama
